Street Photography - massively popular, but I'm not sure I really know what it is. James Maher seems to sum my confusion up well:
"Trying to define street photography is almost like trying to define what sweet or salty is. You can’t fully describe it, but you know it when you see it. Street photographers are observers, flâneurs by nature. It is a way of connecting with the world and bringing back the moments that stand out." — https://jamesmaherphotography.com/street_photography/what-is-street-photography/
It's not something I have really grasped, however, I am definitely a flâneur, I like people watching and sitting to watch the world go by. So I thought I'd give it a go.
I picked a crossroads in the beautiful Dutch fort town of Galle whilst on holiday in Sri Lanka. I visited the same spot several times and on different days.
Galle, Sri Lanka's 4th largest city, has had quite the history. First created in the 1500s by the Portuguese, then both the Dutch and British made their stamp, it is quite the beautiful spot.
"What you will find inside the fortifications is Sri Lanka’s best-preserved colonial town; a grid of streets lined with beautiful white and pale, pastel yellow villas topped with red-tile roofs. In stark contrast to the busy, tuk-tuk-filled streets of the main city, Fort is like stepping back in time to an ambiguous European settlement. At the right time of day, it is a magically serene place to amble around, taking in the atmospheric old streets, quaint churches and wonderful seafood scene." — https://www.manvsglobe.com/galle-fort-sri-lanka-guide/
Whilst now fully rebuilt, it was almost destroyed during the 2004 Tsunami (Dave McClane describes this better than I could in the above link), but it is wearing it's scars well and remains my favourite place in Sri Lanka.
Whilst it's a hugely popular destination during the day and early evening, it tends be peaceful at either end of the day, which is when I headed out. It was also much less humid then too!
